Canyon Vista Medical Center today announced it has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® Certification as a Center of Excellence for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement. The certification is for Joint Commission-accredited hospitals, critical access hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers seeking to elevate the quality, consistency and safety of their services and patient care.

Canyon Vista Medical Center underwent a rigorous onsite review on August 25, 2017. Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with advanced disease-specific care standards and total hip and total knee replacement requirements, including orthopedic consultation, and pre-operative, intraoperative and post-surgical orthopedic surgeon follow-up care.

Established in 2016 and awarded for a two-year period, the certification was developed in response to the growing number of patients undergoing a total hip or total knee replacement surgery, as well as the increased focus on clinical evidence-based patient care as it relates to pain management, quality of life issues, functional limitation in mobility and the return to normal daily activities.

  • Have at least one core measure set that had a composite rate of 95 percent or above, and within that measure set, achieve a performance rate of 95 percent or above on all applicable individual accountability measures.

GoldSeal_4colorCanyon Vista Medical Center announced that it has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hospital Accreditation and Home Care Accreditation  by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal of Approval® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care.

Canyon Vista Medical Center underwent a rigorous, unannounced on-site survey. During the review, a team of Joint Commission expert surveyors evaluated compliance with hospital standards related to several areas, including emergency management, environment of care, infection prevention and control, leadership, and medication management. Surveyors also conducted on-site observations and interviews.

The Joint Commission has accredited hospitals for more than 60 years. More than 4,000 general, children’s, long-term acute, psychiatric, rehabilitation and specialty hospitals currently maintain accreditation from The Joint Commission, awarded for a three-year period. In addition, approximately 360 critical access hospitals maintain accreditation through a separate program.

Canyon Vista Medical Center is the first medical center in Cochise County to be designated as a Level III Trauma Center. The designation means Canyon Vista Medical Center has the staff, training, equipment, supplies, and policies to provide trauma care to injured patients and improve outcomes for survival.

The designation is official May 1, 2015. It also ensures that Canyon Vista Medical Center is continuously working to evaluate and improve on the care that is provided through an established trauma performance improvement process. Canyon Vista Medical Center is focused to provide access to quality healthcare for Cochise County, Fort Huachuca and our surrounding communities. Designations like this demonstrate our commitment to meeting this goal.

What is a Level III Trauma Center?Trauma Certificate

Level III

A Level III Trauma Center has demonstrated an ability to provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care and stabilization of injured patients and emergency operations.

Elements of Level III Trauma Centers Include:

  • 24-hour immediate coverage by emergency medicine physicians and the prompt availability of general surgeons and anesthesiologists.
  • Incorporates a comprehensive quality assessment program
  • Has developed transfer agreements for patients requiring more comprehensive care at a Level I or Level II Trauma Center.
  • Provides back-up care for rural and community hospitals.
  • Offers continued education of the nursing and allied health personnel or the trauma team.
  • Involved with prevention efforts and must have an active outreach program for its referring communities.
